IN the battle for tree-shelter supremacy, there was a new player in town. Grown Green joined the list of brands promising the perfect biodegradable solution, and it had a few tricks up its sleeve.

Made from long fibre virgin pulp and having gone under extensive testing in a specialist lab, the firm's shelters are already being used by a string of local authorities, on HS2 sites, and are approved by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

"There is a conglomerate of directors who got together around three years ago and said 'enough is enough',” director Jo Livall said. “The planet is just riddled with plastic.

"We came up with a cardboard alternative. Everything about it is natural. There are no nasties here and it is made in a carbon neutral factory in Nottingham.

"We are not adding anything onto your carbon footprint either, other than the final delivery.”

While the shelters are yet to undergo long-term testing, they are being used at a number of sites in different conditions.

One of the major benefits, Jo said, of Grown Green is the fact its product is made in the UK, meaning they can adapt in real time to demand.

She said: “For instance with HS2, what is the point in putting standard guards on an embankment? We’ve created angled guards, so they sit totally tight to it, and they don’t fly off.”
