THE inaugural British Open Speed Fencing competition will take place during APF 2024.

Born out of the higher demand and interest in Clipex steel fence posts, the contest will see teams facing off against the clock and one another – but not ignoring the quality of their work.

They will be expected to erect 60 m of fencing using Clipex intermediate posts, Triple X strainers and X fence fabricated netting, joining and tensioning using the latest fixings on the market from Gripple and Strainrite.

The winner will have the kudos of being the first British Open Speed Fencer 2024.

The competition is one of a number of fencing-related highlights at the forestry exhibition, which will also see the  British Open Fencing Championships taking place.

Sponsored by McVeigh Parker, 12 two-person teams will compete to be crowned British Open winner, with prizes for the runners up.

The teams have to erect 60 m of stock fencing in four hours. The fence has to consist of one turn and have both strutted and box strainers. Only hand tools are allowed.

Points will be won and lost on the overall straightness of the fence, how vertical the posts are and how neatly the struts are fitted to strainers, wire tension and the knots used on the wire and netting.

Stuart Mills, sales director of McVeigh Parker Fencing and Farm suppliers, said: "2022 went extremely well. We had received very positive feedback from both competitors and visitors so made the call to repeat again, with the added Speed competition which will help showcase the speed in which you can erect Clipex fencing.

"With so many foresters being involved in fencing either erecting or specifying, this audience is a very important area we want to demonstrate to. We look forward to welcoming old and new this year.”
