In this series of articles, we will be sharing exclusive coverage from APF 2024.

WHEN it came to chainsaws, APF visitors couldn’t complain about not getting their fill. Whether it was Echo, Milwaukee, or Oregon, there was a wide variety of saws on offer to suit every tree-care-related task.

But understandably, it was the two ‘big boys’ that garnered the most attention.

For many, the show will have been the first chance they will have had to see Husqvarna’s world-first battery-powered chainsaw with a clutch.

Launched last year, the rear-handled 542i XP and arb-focused T542i XP could be found being put through their paces on the always-impressive Husqvarna Arena.

“Its predecessor (540i) was run on a standard sprocket and was very popular,” said Husqvarna ambassador Rob Trott. “But the one thing it was missing was the bogging-down capability that a petrol saw has.

“That’s where the clutch comes into it. When you go into the timber on a previous battery saw, there was a lot of stopping and starting. With this one, it powers through in the same way a petrol one would.

“Battery has always had the torque capability because it doesn’t have to compensate for the fuel and air, but the clutch helps it cut through the awkward things like knots.”

Boasting a maximum chain speed of 24 m/s and a 36 V battery – that can be used across Husqy’s range – the 542i is also equipped with a chain oil sensor.

“It’s comparable to a petrol saw now,” Rob added. “The 540i was fantastic. But now it can go above and beyond. I’d even recommend a 16-inch bar on the saw.”
