FIREFIGHTERS continue to tackle a blaze after it broke out in a Welsh timber yard nearly 24 hours ago. 

Around 100 tonnes of wood were being housed on the site near Cardiff's Mill Road when the fire started at around 7pm on Wednesday. 

And while it is now under control, emergency services remain in attendance, using water from the River Ely to extinguish the flames. They are urging local resident to keep their windows and doors closed.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) officials are also involved in the clear-up, using excavators to move the timber, with the fire "deeply embedded" in the stockpile. 

A fire service spokeswoman said: "At approximately 7:29pm on Wednesday, May 24, we received reports of a commercial fire on Birdies Lane, Ely, Cardiff. 

"Several of our crews attended and have been using specialist equipment including water ladders and bowsers, to manage the fire. 

"This incident is ongoing and we advise communities to keep their doors and windows closed." 

Fire officials have said it is too soon to know the cause of the blaze.

An NRW spokesperson said: "One of our excavators is now on site to move the timber around so that they can extinguish the fire, which is deeply embedded in the timber stockpile.

"The site is located next to the River Ely and a large volume of fire water run-off has entered the river.

"Our officers will be taking water samples downstream to monitor the river water quality and to assess any impact it’s having."
