A MAN in his sixties has become the second person arrested by police investigating the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree. 

Officers say the suspect is in custody and assisting them with their enquiries. His arrest follows a 16-year-old boy, who has since been released on bail 

There was widespread shock and anger when the tree - once named England’s finest - was discovered lying next to Hadrian’s Wall on Thursday morning.

A statement on Friday night from Northumbria Police read: “Officers investigating the vandalism of an iconic Northumberland tree have made a second arrest. 

“A full investigation was launched after the Sycamore Gap Tree was felled overnight between Wednesday and Thursday in what we believe was a deliberate act of vandalism

“Since then, a range of enquires have been ongoing, with the support of partners. And this evening, we have arrested a second male – in his 60s – in connection with the incident. He remains in police custody at this time and is assisting us with our enquiries.

"We hope this second arrest demonstrates just how seriously we’re taking this situation and our ongoing commitment to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“If you’ve seen or heard anything suspicious that may be of interest to us – we’d implore you to contact us.”
