LEAD FORESTER

Grosvenor is recruiting a Lead Forester to join its Estate Management team at the Abbeystead Estate.

Situated in the Trough of Bowland, Lancashire, Abbeystead is a sporting and conservation estate renowned for its grouse moor and private, non-commercial, pheasant shoot and consists of heather moorland and upland hill farms that principally farm beef, sheep and dairy, together with almost 400 hectares of woodland.

As part of Grosvenor, Abbeystead Estate operates with a far-sighted perspective and aims to make a lasting and positive impact on communities.

The main purpose of the role will be to manage the day-to-day operational aspects of woodland management at Abbeystead Estate. This will include managing the two Foresters to provide good quality leadership whilst setting clear and high standards of work. This aspect of the role requires a candidate who understands forestry practice and has an aptitude for operating forestry machinery – chainsaws, forwarders and excavators (harvesters).

The Lead Forester will report to the Deputy Head of Forestry who will provide direction, support and feedback through regular meetings and take responsibility for strategic and long-term planning and monitor tasks and quality.

The Lead Forester has a key role in improving standards, efficiency and safety and for suggesting, developing and implementing new ideas and ways of working.

It is important that the candidate passionately believes in the role of timber and forestry in delivering a low carbon and sustainable future where trees and timber are used for energy, construction, climate change mitigation and the delivery of eco-services. The sustainable management of woodland and timber harvesting is an important part of Grosvenor’s strategy.

The role offers a mix of office based and practical tasks.

Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or another relevant professional body is desirable.

The role will attract a competitive salary and benefits package.
